Our New "Paint at Home" Video Series

As we have learned over the last six months, life as we know it has changed. We are spending most of our time at home. And if you have kids in your life, chances are they may be doing a lot of their learning at home too. We have created the "Paint at Home" video series for our YouTube channel to help bridge the gap between art education in a traditional school setting and making art at home.

Episode 1 features Dynasty Brand Specialist Jill Fitzhenry and her granddaughter Kylie working together to paint an inspirational wooden scroll cut-out. Painting techniques such as  basecoating and stenciling are great for developing hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills--and they are fun too!

Please click here for a complete list of supplies and materials needed for this project.

More "Paint at Home" episodes are coming soon--follow our Facebook page and Instagram for details. In the meantime, we invite you to visit our complete archive of videos on YouTube

And as always, to learn more about all of our Dynasty brand brushes please visit our website.

Remote Learning: Preparing For Art Class At Home

Back to School is looking a bit different for most families in the United States this year. Many households are preparing for another round of remote learning by creating a space in their home suitable to use as a stand-in "classroom." In a normal year, paint brushes likely aren't on the typical school supply list, but as many parents find themselves having to orchestrate art lessons at home, they will be in need of some quality art tools for their children's home studio.

Luckily, the Kid Dynasty collection of brushes has it covered! These economical, versatile brushes are constructed with shorter handles, perfect for younger artists with smaller hands. Bristles are available in both round and flat shapes and would be the perfect addition to your home art classroom. To learn more about all of the Kid Dynasty varieties and our entire stock of high-quality artist paintbrushes, please visit our website. More Artists Rave About Water Lily by Dynasty!

Praise continues to pour in about our new line of watercolor brushes, Water Lily by Dynasty! Perfect for professional artists and painters, hobbyists, and art journalists this collection of cruelty-free brushes has something for everyone.

By Dynasty Artist Annie Strack, painted with Water Lily

From painter Annie Strack:

"Water Lily by Dynasty Brush is the absolute perfect brush for watercolor painters. It performs like a Kolinsky Sable more than any other synthetic brush I’ve ever used. It’s not that the hairs are softer (which they are) or finer (which they are) but that they are much more absorbent than other synthetics. As a result, they hold much more fluid and allow for long sweeping brushstrokes without having to stop as often to reload the brush like you normally have to do with synthetic brushes. They are soft enough that you can skip across rough paper to let texture show though, and yet they have just the right amount of spring for painting fine lines and details. Because they are synthetic, they hold an incredibly fine point that doesn’t wear down like a natural hair brush. I’ve been waiting a long time for a great vegan alternative to using Kolinsky Sable, and now here it is. It has all the attributes of an expensive natural hair brush, but with the durability and affordability of a synthetic. This is my new ‘go-to' brush, that I’m using in all my paintings."

You can see more of Annie's work on FacebookInstagram, and on her website

By Dynasty Brand Specialist Jill Fitzhenry, painted with Water Lily

From artist and designer Jill Fitzhenery:

"The new Water Lily brushes from Dynasty are so delightful to use. I love the tips on the brushes that allow me to produce a fine line or a broad stroke. I feel so inspired by these beautiful brushes!"

What Artists Are Saying About Dynasty Water Lily!

Water Lily is our newest techno-synthetic line of watercolor brushes! They are sustainable, cruelty-free, and have a unique combination of synthetic fibers able to hold a large amount of pigment while allowing for a controlled release of paint. With their soft spring, smooth snap, crisp point, and their short coral shimmer wood handles, Water Lily is the perfect tool for traditional watercolor, inking, and art journaling.

Dynasty Water Lily

Some lucky artists were given a special opportunity to try these unique brushes prior to their widespread release. Here is what makers, creators, and designers are saying about them:

From artist Gina Croce:
“I have been painting and teaching for many years and am always skeptical of trying something new. I have to say, this was the absolute exception! I was sooo pleased with the ability that they have to hold lots of water, the point which snaps back (#1 importance to me) and the quill is so soft and thirsty I was absolutely thrilled!”

You can find more art by Gina on Facebook and Instagram.

From artist Robyne Recca:
“I really liked how they performed for me. I loved how light-weight they felt in my hand and felt that they held a lot of water...the points on the brushes were easy to pull/push color where narrow lines met without going beyond the area.”

Retailer Spotlight: Wet Paint Artists' Materials and Framing

Today in our ongoing series of featuring Dynasty Brush retailers we are featuring Wet Paint Artists’ Materials & Framing, located in St. Paul, Minnesota. Darin Rinne, co-owner of Wet Paint, was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to help us learn more about not only his store, but how his business is operating during these uncertain times.

Wet Paint Artists' Materials & Framing, Saint Paul, MN
Where is your store located? How long has Wet Paint been in business?
"Wet Paint Artists' Materials & Framing has been in the same two block stretch of St. Paul’s Grand Avenue since its founding in 1976."

Does your store have a motto/philosophy/mission?
"The mission of Wet Paint is to meet the needs of artists at any level of intention. We meet these needs by sourcing and selling a comprehensive selection of the highest quality artists' supplies and related materials at a competitive price, providing knowledgeable, dedicated customer service, and supplementing our core product mix with complementary services and programming. With nearly 300 combined years of art materials retailing experience, Wet Paint is recognized in its community and its industry for retaining a staff of working artists who are as passionate about the supplies they sell as the customers they serve."

How COVID-19 affected the store...
"We decided early on in this pandemic that our first priority is to protect our staff and customers as best we can. Even though we received a “Critical Sector” exemption from the Office of the Governor, we opted to close completely for two weeks. And when we have been open, we’ve only done “contactless” business…curbside pickup, shipping and delivery. Since the Governor of Minnesota has allowed the “lockdown” order to expire after many weeks and a couple of extensions, and retail stores now have the option to bring in their employees and customers while following safety guidelines.

What will this mean for Wet Paint? We’ve discussed this with other stores locally and with our friends at art stores around the country. That’s been very enlightening, as each state moves through this at a different rate and every store is different. Uniformly, though, we are agreed that the nature of this pandemic hasn’t changed. While our hospitals are better prepared for more cases than they were in early April there is still a real and significant risk from this disease to our community and our staff. If infection rates change we might be back into a restricted status at some point, potentially in cycles, for quite a while. We expect that a large number of our customers will still prefer to shop with us without the additional risk of coming into the store so we will need to continue to offer curbside pickup and delivery. We are operating with a reduced staff and have altered many of our processes to make our current system as efficient as possible. Opening our front door to meter in a few people at a time to browse would require additional resources that we frankly don’t have to keep everyone protected…and the shopping experience would be pretty crappy, since we’ve reconfigured everything to make curbside pickup and delivery work well.

We will continue to do our very best to provide great service and products via our contactless methods, and will absolutely innovate everywhere that we can to make that better. But until something significant changes in the way this virus behaves, or can be treated or prevented, we will continue doing business as we have been doing."

A big thank you to Darin for his participation in this post! If you would like to order supplies from Wet Paint Artists' Materials & Framing, be sure to check their website for the most up-to-date information regarding placing orders, shipping, store hours, etc. You can also follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

Flowers of Hope

In April we decided that our Wednesday #showyourworkwednesday prompts for the month would have a special theme. As a way to spread joy, hope, and unity, we came up with the "Flowers of Hope" initiative. So every Wednesday in April we and our friends at DecoArt encouraged our social media followers to create a rainbow-colored flower and share it with the special hashtag #flowersofhope.

Examples of Flowers of Hope from our Dynasty Artists and Retailers.
It was incredible to see how artists interpreted the prompt and made their flowers into journal entries, chalk paintings, and traditional works. Thank you to the artists who made the work above: Marika Moretti (top left,) Maureen Baker (top right,) Marlene Fudge (bottom right,) and Jill Fitzhenry. To see the full range of art that people have created, just type #flowersofhope into the search bar of Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.

Now more than ever, keep making, keep creating, and keep sharing your art with the world! We love seeing what you create with Dynasty brushes--be sure to use the #dynastybrush hashtag or tag our account on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter when posting to social media!

Support our retailers: Jerry's Artist Outlet

The COVID-19 outbreak has caused many retailers and small businesses to close their storefronts for the time being. Many of these companies are still providing online ordering and/or ordering over the phone. One these retailers is Jerry's Artist Outlet.

Painting on Denim with Dynasty Artist Tracy Weinzapfel

Do you always find yourself painting on the same sort of surface? Here is something that may take you out of your creative comfort zone--painting on denim! Dynasty Artist Tracy Weinzapfel recently talked with us about how she has ventured into making art that you can wear!
Dynasty Artist Tracy Weinzapfel

What made you want to try painting on denim and what was your first denim project?
"I live to love what I do. I was just about to throw out an old pair of pants and I decided why not upcycle them and paint some of my fun whimsical designs on them. I did not have any expectations of how they would turn out and also wondered how a 49 year old woman would look in them. I totally enjoyed the creative process and decided this was perfect for me. The result was amazing and I just love them again! They are a billboard of sorts for being an artist and art teacher. I recently wore them to Creative Painting in Las Vegas and was stopped by so many people at the show and on the Las Vegas strip asking about them."

How does painting on denim compare to painting on other surfaces?
"Fabrics such as denim are more three dimensional than say a canvas or art journal. Sometimes you have to manipulate to keep the fabric smooth while you are painting. In this case, I cut cardboard boxes the width of the legs to keep a smooth surface. Also, fabrics are more absorbent so that is why it is important to have the right tools for the right job such as awesome Dynasty Brushes and paints made for fabric."

Jacket painted by Tracy Weinzapfel
Do you need to prewash the denim prior to painting on it?
"These jeans were used and worn so I did not have to pre-wash as you would new materials. I do recommend pre-washing any fabrics that you paint. I also recommend following the fabric paint directions on the bottle as all paints vary."

What special tools or paints do you use for your denim pieces?
"I used DecoArt SoSoft fabric paints which are great. They dry soft and pliable vs. a standard acrylic paint that would be hard and would crack. I also used my Dynasty Black Silver and Faux Sable brushes. The rest was done freehand I kept my drawings fun and easy."

Other news from Tracy:
"I also had the opportunity to teach a denim painting class in February at one of my local wineries. 20 students join me for an afternoon of painting and wine. I captured that fun here:

*GIVEAWAY* Art Journaling with Dynasty Artist Tracy Weinzapfel

Art journaling is a becoming a popular way to keep creative and practice self-care. We recently asked Dynasty Artist Tracy Weinzapfel for some insight about her approach to art journaling and she was lovely enough to share her knowledge here. Keep reading to learn more about how to start your own journaling journey and how to enter our very special contest!

Artist Tracy Weinzapfel

All photos here appear courtesy of the artist.

How long have you being making art?
"I have been making some sort of art since I could hold a crayon. I was content to be coloring all day. I wanted to pursue Art or Architectures but earned a Bachelor's Degree in Building Construction Management from Michigan State.  My parents encouraged me to get a degree to fall back on and then pursue my passion which I am glad they did!"
What led you to art journaling and what do you get out of it?
"I have done all sorts of art mediums including canvas, wine barrels, wood, paper and more. I worked for DecoArt and got lots of fun experience in many different mediums. I took some much needed time off to step back in my life a couple of years ago to regroup. Life has presented some stumbles and I needed that time to focus on my family and home life.  During that time I picked back up my art journal as a means to just express myself and formed a morning meditation of sorts to focus and rest my mind from life. I discovered how important that time was and started to share the art from that time and in my journals. The response was amazing and I realized I needed to express this creative side of myself again. It is a safe place to share my ups and downs and find the good in every day…even/especially during the tough times."
Examples of Tracy's journaling
What are your favorite tools/supplies for art journaling?
"My favorite tools are all about keeping it simple and portable. I carry an art journal at all times and like to have one that is travel sized so I can even pull it out in the car or in doctor's waiting rooms. I love basic portable watercolors along with my Dynasty brushes. One final favorite tool are basic black Sharpies. I like to share that basic tools will work and finding the right tool for the job makes the job a ton easier!"

Any advice for someone who wants to try art journaling? What do they need to know?
"I share my Five Keys to Art Journaling here where I give all the basics to get started. You do not need to know how to draw or paint so do not let that stop you. I teach many shortcuts for those who "cannot draw a stick figure" (which always makes me laugh because how often do you want to draw a stick figure?) If you love colorful things, like to be creative, or want to delve into putting yourself and your emotions in a journal than art journaling is a great place to start. The great thing about art journals is they are great starting places to practice and learn what inspires you. I am inspired by nature and flowers so that has been a tool for me to learn about local plants and succulents. You are not locked into that art journal and can take your art to larger mediums like wine barrels, furniture, clothing and more!"

Other news from Tracy:
"I have an awesome 2 hour LIVE workshop on Facebook on February 29th called Leap into Art Journaling. This is a two hour workshop in a Private Facebook Group where I will breakdown an art journal page from start to finish!  It is a great opportunity and only requires a few basic tools that you probably already have! Plus it comes with a free template/pattern for those who are not ready to diving into drawing. I am going to hold your hand and break it down into bite sized pieces for you to complete an art journal page. It can be viewed LIVE with active chat/participation and/or can be viewed later so you do not need to be there. It is only $19 and you can get your seat here.

I also have a membership group called Your Artful Journey:  This is for members only where monthly you get:
  • Monthly Art Classes
  • Monthly Art Challenges and Prompts
  • Monthly FB LIVES "Wine with Wein" - exclusive access to Tracy for Q & A
  • Private Facebook Community
  • ...and so much love and support! We can't wait to see you inside!

For more information please join me on Facebook:  Every Wednesday I am on Facebook LIVE from my Studio at 5:30 pm (PST). I have different topics every week to inspire you to be creative in all you do!"
